Sereno Canyon's Fall Trail Mornings Start at Tom's Thumb and End at Alterra

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve trailhead with restrooms and water has been closed since July 13, 2026. Brown's Ranch Trailhead, at 30301 N. Alma School Parkway, shut down for a $1.17 million city improvement project. The closure covers the trailhead building, the parking lot and parts of the trail system around it. Patch's July report said the work was expected to wrap up by fall 2026. The city's McDowell Sonoran Preserve page now says a grand reopening is anticipated for late October, though it hasn't named a specific date.

So in Sereno Canyon, the first weeks of trail season run through the smaller trailheads closer to home, and those come without drinking water. The good news is in the calendar. Most of the guided hikes the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy has posted for October through December fall on days Alterra is open at Mountain House Lodge, and several end within an hour or two of Alterra's 10 a.m. opening.

Where the Preserve Opens Up This Fall

While Brown's Ranch is closed, the city's alternates are Pima-Dynamite, Fraesfield, Granite Mountain and Tom's Thumb. Patch's July report adds that Tom's Thumb, Fraesfield and Granite Mountain have no drinking water.

Three of the four trailheads closest to Sereno Canyon are dry until the fourth reopens. Bring all the water you'll need from home.

Tom's Thumb Is the Short Drive

Tom's Thumb sits at 23015 N. 128th St. Mountain House Lodge is at 23860 N. 125th Place, with its listed cross street at Ranch Gate Road and Happy Valley. Going by address, Tom's Thumb is the closest of the four named trailheads to the lodge side of the community. It works best for the mornings when you just want to get onto granite before the day warms up, with no guided group and no RSVP.

You'll need to plan ahead for water. Tom's Thumb has none, so whatever you'd normally top off at a trailhead fountain has to leave the house with you. That applies to dog bowls too. One more thing to know before you go: Patch's coverage named Tom's Thumb as a place the city is sending visitors during the closure, but it didn't report how parking there has held up. We don't have numbers on crowding, and the guidance we have doesn't assume any.

Fraesfield Carries Most of the Guided Season

The Conservancy says its public activities run mostly from September through April, and it uses its online calendar for sign-ups. This fall, Fraesfield, at 13400 East Rio Verde Dr., hosts three of these five outings:

  1. October 22, 8 to 9:30 a.m. "Brown's Ranch: The Real Story," a free half-mile walk on the Jane Rau trail at Brown's Ranch Trailhead. It covers the Indigenous people who lived in the area, the military's role in the region and its ranching history.
  2. October 23, 8 to 11 a.m. "Missions, Massacres, and Plagues," an educational hike at Fraesfield.
  3. November 19, 9 a.m. to noon. "Noteworthy & Notorious Arizonans," a free, easy three-mile hike at Fraesfield led by a former Scottsdale archaeologist.
  4. November 26, 9 to 10:30 a.m. "More Pie Please," a free, moderate 2.5-mile Thanksgiving hike from Lost Dog Wash Trailhead, 12601 N. 124th Street.
  5. December 19, 9 to 11 a.m. "Hidden Desert," a free educational walk at Fraesfield about the signs nocturnal animals leave behind.

The calendar holds more than these five. November also lists "Return to Azatlan" on November 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the "Gateway to Windgate Pass Hike" on November 17 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. December adds "Mistletoe and Holly" on December 20 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Watch the October 22 walk. The Conservancy's listing still points to Brown's Ranch Trailhead and promises restrooms and water there. That promise only holds if the trailhead reopens in time. The city anticipates a late October reopening, which leaves October 22 close to the line. If you RSVP, check the meeting spot with the Conservancy the week before. The listing also asks walkers to arrive 15 minutes early, leave dogs at home and bring water and snacks.

The November 26 hike is the one stop on this list well south of the community. Lost Dog Wash is on 124th Street at the Preserve's southern end, so Thanksgiving morning means a longer drive than the Fraesfield outings.

Most of the Guided Calendar Lands on an Alterra Day

Alterra is closed Monday and Tuesday. It opens at 10 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday and closes at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday and at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Here's how those hours line up with the Conservancy's fall dates:

  • October 22 is a Thursday. The walk ends at 9:30 a.m., half an hour before Alterra opens.
  • October 23 is a Friday. The Fraesfield hike ends at 11 a.m., an hour after opening.
  • November 19 is a Thursday. That hike ends at noon.
  • November 26 is Thanksgiving Thursday. The hike ends at 10:30 a.m. Holiday hours aren't posted, so call ahead.
  • December 19 is a Saturday. The walk ends at 11 a.m., on one of Alterra's 9 p.m. nights.

The exception is November 17, a Tuesday, so the Windgate Pass hike ends on a day Alterra is closed. The November 15 and December 20 hikes both fall on Sundays and end at 1 p.m. and 12:30 p.m., well inside Alterra's hours. Mondays and Tuesdays are still good for unguided hikes from Tom's Thumb, but you'll be eating somewhere else afterward.

Michael Mann is Mountain House Lodge's executive chef. The lodge describes Alterra's food as a mix of traditional American and international cooking made with locally sourced ingredients. Fall Arizona Restaurant Week ran September 18 to 27, 2026, so the $55 prix-fixe Alterra offered for it is over. The menus Alterra has posted online come from different seasons. The lodge's dining page links to a June 2026 file, and the restaurant's OpenTable listing links to a winter 2026 file, so check with the restaurant before planning around a specific dish. To get there, enter through the main gate on N. 125th Place.

The Lodge's October Calendar Fills the Afternoons

After a morning on the trail, the lodge's October 2026 calendar has a few low-key afternoon options at Alterra. The month includes Mah Jongg and Mexican Train Dominoes, and "Casino Night Hosted By Toll Brothers" is set for October 29 on the Alterra Event Patio. October 29 is a Thursday, one week after the Brown's Ranch walk.

If your trail day calls for a recovery plan, Mountain House Lodge limits its pools, spa and fitness studio to residents and cottage guests. Hiking friends who don't live in the community can join you on the trail at Tom's Thumb or Fraesfield. The pool deck afterward is for residents and cottage guests only.

When Brown's Ranch Comes Back

When Brown's Ranch reopens, you'll see the results of a project paid for by Scottsdale's 2004 Preservation Sales Tax. The city describes it as an upgrade for safety, congestion and the visitor experience. The upgrades include a redesigned lot, better drainage and traffic flow, new lighting and roofing, a dispersal area, and reroutes of five trail segments. If you've hiked those five segments before, expect some changes to familiar routes. Until the city announces a reopening date, plan your fall around Tom's Thumb on 128th Street, Fraesfield on Rio Verde Drive and Granite Mountain on 136th Street, and pack your own water.
